For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
Psalm 91:11-12

It was a perfect day weather wise. The sun was shining with no wind and no rain in sight … just fluffy white clouds floating across the azure blue sky bringing tranquility to my soul.  I was driving the company truck to pick up parts to deliver.  I only do this part-time you know.  I’ve been retired for several years from my job as a land surveyor.  My wife and I are planning to spend our last years together floating along like those clouds in perfect peace and harmony with life.  She called me before I left, by the way, and said she and Lucy, our little Yorkie, are about to take a nap.  My wife had knee surgery two weeks ago and just returned from therapy, so I guess a nap is in order.

I’m leisurely driving the slow speed limit through a neighborhood, enjoying the sunshiny day … then it happened!  What, I’m not quite sure.  Even after being told, I’m not quite sure how the events unfolded.

The next thing I knew I was being pulled out the front windshield of the truck by city workers, policeman, and firefighters.  It’s all so surreal and  very confusing!  People  are everywhere! They’re asking me my name.  I tell them, but there’s this excruciating pain on my face and right arm preventing me from concentrating. What happened?  What’s going on?  One moment the sun is shining on a perfectly beautiful day and the next, well … total chaos!  Is this a dream … no … a nightmare?

The previous paragraphs were written from what I perceive to be my husband Dave’s point of view on July 17, 2018 at 2:00 in the afternoon.  Please note that about twelve noon I felt led to pray for his safety.  I prayed Psalm 91, that God would give His angels charge over him to protect him.

As he was casually driving down the road on an ordinary day, out of nowhere the top of a tree fell on the cab of his truck crushing it and pinning him in.  Since he was probably knocked unconscious, we can only surmise the events following. Not only was his body pinned, but his foot was pinned on the gas.  That being so, the truck continued forward unchecked and at the same speed. It finally crashed in a drainage ditch, but because his foot was on the gas, the wheel was still spinning causing sparks and igniting the gas tank.  Flames were in the cab now, burning his face, head and right arm.  They were accelerating fast!  First responders tell me they were steeling themselves to witness a horrible end.  But God answered my prayer!  He sent the angels!

The first wave of angels were in work uniforms that said, “City of Gardendale”.  City workers who witnessed the accident called their dispatcher who called for backup while on his way to the scene.  Soon more angels appeared in the form of policemen and firefighters.  Each one jumping in to do his part to save the life of this man who was in danger of being burned alive right before their eyes.

One of the policemen had a cold fire extinguisher in his squad car and sprayed Dave, stopping the flames from burning him further. The firemen used the “jaws of life” to cut him out and pull him to safety.  One of the policemen stayed with him the whole time, trying to reassure him and comfort him.  The city workers stayed on the scene throughout the whole ordeal assisting in anyway they could.

These angels never hail themselves as angels.  As a matter of fact, they would probably dispute the fact that I call them such.  But they are … Angels.  God uses people who are willing, able and compassionate to do much of his work here on earth.  And for that I am very grateful!  These men were willing to put themselves in harms way to save the life of another human being  whom they didn’t even know.  These are ordinary men who assumed the person of angels for a short period of time.  They saved a man who is someone’s husband, father and grandfather.

So Friends, I want you to know … angels are real! And sometimes they are real people!  I want to give thanks from a grateful heart to the Angels who saved my husband Dave from certain death on that fateful day that spiraled out of control. Thank you!  Thank you!!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
